Pediatric neurology care for children at Samarth Hospital Miraj

What is Pediatric Neurology?

Pediatric neurology is the subspecialty of medicine dedicated to diagnosing and treating neurological disorders in children from infancy through adolescence. Children's brains are not simply "small adult brains" - their developing nervous systems present unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. At Samarth Neuro & Superspeciality Hospital, our pediatric neurology services - led by Dr. Shilpa Patil (Pediatrician) - focus on conditions like childhood epilepsy, febrile seizures, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays, and pediatric brain tumors, providing gentle, child-centered care in collaboration with our neurosurgical team.

How It Works

01

Child-Friendly Initial Assessment

Our pediatric team creates a calm, non-threatening environment for your child. A detailed history from parents and a gentle neurological examination form the basis of evaluation.

02

Age-Appropriate Diagnostic Testing

Investigations are tailored to the child's age and condition - EEG for seizure characterization, MRI brain (with appropriate sedation if needed), developmental assessments, and genetic testing when indicated.

03

Accurate Diagnosis & Classification

Correct seizure classification (focal vs. generalized, epilepsy syndrome identification) is critical for choosing the right medication. We take time to get this right.

04

Personalized Medication Management

Anti-epileptic drugs are carefully selected, dosed, and monitored with weight-based dosing calculations and regular blood level monitoring to optimize seizure control and minimize side effects in growing children.

05

Developmental Support & Parental Guidance

We provide guidance on school accommodations, dietary therapies (e.g., ketogenic diet for refractory epilepsy), safety measures, and connect families with support groups and developmental therapy services.

Signs & Symptoms

If you or a loved one experience any of the following, seek medical attention immediately:

  • Febrile seizures (convulsions with fever) in infants or young children
  • Recurrent seizures or staring spells in a child
  • Delayed speech, language, or motor milestones
  • Regression of previously acquired developmental skills
  • Abnormal head size (macrocephaly or microcephaly)
  • Unsteady gait or coordination problems in a child
  • Behavioral changes or academic decline (possible absence seizures)

Frequently Asked Questions

My child had one seizure - do they have epilepsy?

Not necessarily. A single unprovoked seizure does not automatically mean epilepsy. However, it requires thorough evaluation. Epilepsy is generally diagnosed after two or more unprovoked seizures.

Are febrile seizures dangerous?

Febrile seizures are common and usually harmless in young children. However, the first febrile seizure always warrants medical evaluation to rule out serious causes like meningitis. Most children outgrow febrile seizures by age 5-6.

Will my child need medication for life?

Not necessarily. Many childhood epilepsy syndromes are self-limiting, and medication can often be safely discontinued after 2 years of seizure freedom. Your neurologist will guide this decision based on the specific epilepsy type and EEG findings.
